In a survey, 3/16 of the people surveyed told that they preferred to use public transport while commuting daily to office. 5/8 of the people surveyed told that they preferred to use their own vehicles. The remaining 75 respondents said that they had no clear preference. How many people preferred to use public transport?

5/8 double is 10/16
3/16 + 10/16 = (13/16)y +75 = y
75 = 3y/16
2516 = y
2516*3/16 = 75 !!
Let total number of people be surveyed =X
Therefore, Number of people who prefer public transport=(3/16)*X
Number of people who use their own vehicle=(5/8)*X
Remaining people with no clear preference= 75
hence we arrive on the equation, (3/16)*X+(5/8)*X+75=X
after solving we get X=400
So people who prefer public transport= 93/16)*400=75
